How To Choose A Metal Workbench
A metal workbench is the best choice of workbench if you will be using your workbench professionally or for heavy-duty DIY projects. They are perfect for engineering workshops and home garages because they are sterile, low maintenance, easy to clean and resilient to all common oils, greases, chemicals, and solvents.
If you are thinking about buying a metal workbench, here’s how to choose one:
Medium or heavy duty?
Depending on how you will use your metal workbench and what for, you will need either a medium, heavy or super heavy duty workbench.
The difference between these duty grades is the thickness of the steel and the weight of the workbench. For example, a super heavy duty workbench might have a 44mm thick hardwood core and a 2mm galvanised steel coating, while a medium-duty workbench might just have a 2mm galvanised steel worktop with no core.
Metal workbenches are available in a wide range of sizes to suit most requirements. The commonest sizes are as follows:
· 1200 x 750 x 840mm (WxDxH)
· 1500 x 600 x 840mm (WxDxH)
· 1500 x 900 x 840mm (WxDxH)
· 2000 x 600 x 840mm (WxDxH)
· 2000 x 750 x 840mm (WxDxH)
· 2000 x 900 x 840mm (WxDxH)
However, increments on either side of these dimensions are normal. Make sure you measure the space where your workbench will live and consider the type of work and space you will need to avoid buying a workbench that is too small.
The great thing about metal workbenches is they are modular, which means you can add accessories to make them into anything you need.
You can add shelves, cupboards, lighting rails, drawers, dedicated vices, and much more to build your ultimate workstation. Although these do add to the cost, if you get them from the same place you get your workbench, the fit and finish will be outstanding.
The type of steel
It is common for workbenches to be made from a heavy-duty mild steel angle iron. It’s important this is of the galvanised variety. Mild steel is exceptionally durable and strong. It’s also known as carbon steel or plain steel. It’s ideal for industrial applications, workshops, and home use. Use it for all your DIY and engineering projects.
For food applications, stainless-steel is used because it’s food safe and has excellent anti-corrosive qualities. This is the same steel used in commercial kitchens. If you will be working with food, we recommend stainless steel above all others.
