How To Choose A Workbench With A Vice

If you want a versatile work surface for your garage or workshop, a workbench with a vice will serve you extremely well.

You can bolt a vice permanently to your workbench or you can clamp it, allowing you to move it around your work area. If you are looking for the right workbench and vice, here are some top tips to choose the right setup:

Vice size

When you buy a workbench with a vice, the vice is sold separately as an accessory, so you have plenty of options when it comes to vice size.

The most common vice sizes are 4-inch, 6-inch and 8-inch. For general DIY, a 4-inch vice will be large enough to handle most tasks. For industrial work, we recommend a 6-inch or 8-inch vice so you can handle bigger materials.

The ‘inch’ size of vice is the measurement of contact your vice has with the workpiece. A larger contact means you can handle larger materials.

Workbench size

Workbenches are available in a wide range of sizes. Here are a few:

·       1200 x 750 x 840mm

·       1500 x 600 x 840mm

·       1500 x 750 x 840mm

·       1500 x 900 x 840mm

·       2000 x 600 x 840mm

·       2000 x 750 x 840mm

·       2000 x 900 x 840mm

You should measure your workspace before choosing a size. It may also be helpful to take a piece of chalk to your floor and outline where your workbench will sit.

Workbench duty

You can get a medium duty, heavy duty or super heavy duty workbench.

If you will be using your workbench for industrial purposes, then we recommend a heavy-duty workbench. Heavy duty and super heavy duty workbenches boast a galvanized stainless steel top. If you will be using your workbench for DIY, a medium-duty workbench will serve you fine. These have an MDF or laminate top.

Do you need adjustable height?

When choosing a workbench with a vice, it’s also important to consider how you go about your work and what is most comfortable for you.

If you want the ability to adjust the height of your workbench, so you can transition between standing and sitting, you can get a height-adjustable workbench. These have either an Allen key, hand crank or electric motor for adjustment.
