Why ESD workstations are essential in the electronics industry

Why ESD workstations are essential in the electronics industry

In the electronics industry, precision and protection are paramount, which is why anti-static ESD workstations are so important. Whether you are building circuit boards or testing sensitive electronic components, an electrostatic discharge (ESD) can cause costly damage.

At UK Workbenches, we work with many clients in the electrical and electronics sector so understand the importance of protecting important and sensitive equipment. If your workspace is involved in any sort of electrical work, learn why investing in ESD workstations is a must.

Protection against electrostatic discharge

ESD can cause immediate and lasting damage to electronic components, leading to failures and reduced product lifespan. Anti-static ESD worktops are designed with conductive materials that safely dissipate static electricity, preventing harmful discharges and ensuring product reliability.

Writing on the Electronics Live website, Jonathan Plummer, Managing Director of EMS, said: “If you have ever felt the ‘electric shock’ from an ESD, imagine what that does to an electronic component. Plus, with electronic components getting smaller along with increased circuit density, the risk of ESD damage will only become higher.

“The extent of ESD damage is entirely random and dependent on many factors, including whether the product fails now or later on. A catastrophic failure causes a failure such as a metal melt or junction breakdown in an ESD-sensitive item that is permanent, while a latent defect can occur when an ESD-sensitive item becomes partially degraded due to exposure.”

Compliance with industry standards

The UK has several industry standards for electronics, including the UKCA mark, BS 7671 and BS 7430. These standards ensure that electrical installations and electronic products are safe and meet certain requirements.

  • UKCA mark: this is required for electrical and electronic products sold in Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales). Manufacturers must perform a conformity assessment to ensure the product meets UK legislation and must provide a Declaration of Conformity (DoC).
  • BS 7671: the national standard for electrical installations in the UK, it covers the design, erection, and verification of electrical installations, including additions and alterations. It also applies to Extra Low Voltage (ELV) and Low Voltage (LV) ranges. The standard includes requirements for energy efficiency, surge protection and arc fault detection devices.
  • BS 7430: this covers the code of practice for earthing in the UK.
  • IPC standards: a set of standards that help ensure the quality, reliability and consistency of electronics manufacturing. IPC standards cover nearly every stage of the electronics product development cycle.

Enhanced safety for workers

Static electricity can not only damage components, but also pose safety risks for workers handling sensitive equipment. An ESD workstation mitigates the risks of accidental shocks, ensuring a safer and more controlled environment for employees.

Improved product quality and reliability

Consistent static control leads to better product quality and reliability. By investing in ESD workstations businesses can minimise defective products, ensuring customers receive high-quality, durable electronic goods. Damaged components can also be costly to replace, so ESD workstations can reduce product failures and the need for repairs, ultimately saving money in the long run.

Durable ESD workstations

Our anti-static ESD workstations are built with high-quality steel frames so are designed for durability. The worktops resist wear, chemicals and heat, ensuring a long-lasting surface that withstands the demands of an electronics workspace.

Every workspace is unique, so UK Workbenches offers a variety of ESD workstations tailored to your specific needs. From size variations to additional accessories like lighting, storage and powerpoints, we provide a fully customised approach to ensure a safe working environment.
